Bright new beginnings for South Tacoma property with troubled past
Tacoma WA – The future is promising on Pacific Ave in South Tacoma where the building formerly known for its problematic past as the Morgan Motel takes on a new name and a community focused direction. The property is currently undergoing its transformation into what could be up to 11 micro-apartments providing long-term affordable housing. Opening its doors by the end of 2020, the property will be repurposed to serve the community through long-term housing while giving new life to the 1953 building. The project is led by Amber Moreno, CEO of Love Where You Live Tacoma. Having previously partnered with Eli Moreno and Surge Tacoma on repurposed projects, such as the nearby McKinley Artist Lofts and the Tacoma Flats, Amber knows the ins and outs of inventive and resourceful property renovations. The Lofts are 14 live/work apartments developed for local artists at affordable prices in what was once a long vacant, run-down police station, while the Tacoma Flats are 46 affordable micro-apartments in downtown that previously operated as a hotel. “People have commented that they were scared to walk by the location before, but that’s been slowly changing,” Moreno said. “I want this to be a place for people who love where they live, want to be part of the community here and for the neighbors to have a positive asset to their community, not a detriment.” The micro-apartments will each have a bathroom, onsite parking and laundry, high-speed internet, a small kitchenette and access to the large community kitchen, dining area and outdoor space. The micro-apartments are meant to serve as a home that doesn’t require a whole paycheck to have a roof over one’s head. The concept of living situations that do not demand overly large personal spaces are beginning to thrive across the nation and specifically among students, millennials and commuters. We’re eager to combat the housing crisis with these affordable micro-apartments while recognizing the importance of this location’s ability to positively impact the neighborhood and build a sense of community.
